6 Reasons To Take That New Year's Resolution List And Throw It Away!

On 01 January, the energy of a sense of renewal vibrates across the world. Out with the old and in with the new. We are on a path to create and to thrive. To accomplish goals and learn lessons.

Remember 31 December 1999 and the craze of what would happen when we entered the 21st century? It was a very uncertain, but exciting time! I remember thinking that we would be driving in space cars like in the cartoon The Jetsons!

Having a New Year's Resolution list can take away from that excitement and can make certain a failure of a goal. Therefore, I decided to create a list of reasons not to make a NYR list and to encourage you to do something different! The list is based on my experiences along with my family and friends.

THROW AWAY THAT LIST, NOW!

Similar to a grocery list, if we weren't able to get everything on our list, the first time, while at the supermarket a deep sense of mission (un)accomplished happens. If you're anything like my mom, then a grocery list is a pretty serious thing. She makes time to write down everything the household needs and wants, which includes asking me, my brother, and my step-dad what we want. If the market does not have what she wants or what she wants at a reasonable price, then a certain level of frustration and disappointment happens because she has to go elsewhere.

Now, imagine that grocery list as your NYR list. What feelings arise when you put all of your blood, sweat, and tears into accomplishing a goal and it fails? The thing is, it's easy to feel obligated to a list. For example, we write down important dates on our calendars so that we will remember the event and be committed to preparing for that event. If we can't make it to an event, then there is a feeling of guilt. So, let's get on with that top ten list!

1. Making a New Year's Resolution list leaves out the process of  achieving the goal
  • Writing down, "I will go to the gym three times a week" means what exactly? Will you go Mon, Wed, and Fri? How many hours do you plan on being at the gym? What will you do? Who will you go with to the gym? What's the game plan?
2. Making a NYR list can be constricting
  • What if a better way of achieving your goal comes along? You may feel an unnecessary commitment to your list.
3. Making a NYR list can result in your goals not being specific enough
  • Writing on your list that you want a new home is not clear. By 'home' do you mean a condo or an apartment? Maybe you mean a three bedroom 1 1/2 bath or a five bedroom 2 1/2 bath.
4. You're (secretly) not ready for that BIG change
  • Dropping those ten pounds could mean that more people will notice you and you'll receive attention that you are not ready to receive.
5. Making a NYR list can create a fear of failure due to an (possibly) unrealistic timeline for achievement
  • What if you don't quit smoking by March? What if you don't drop those ten pounds by February? Do the research to ascertain how long it typically takes to lose weight/quit smoking and work with people.
6. You (secretly) don't believe that you can achieve the goal, but you give it a try anyway.
  • Have you ever said an affirmation that felt more like a chore, but continue to say it until it felt true? You have to believe in yourself.
According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology of the University of Scranton, in 2012 the percent of Americans who usually make New Year's Resolutions is 45%. However, only 8% of people are actually successful in achieving their resolution. For more information, click here.

DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT: CREATE A DREAM BOARD!

Creating a dream board is a great way to achieve your goals because it's all visual! In other words, by looking at your dream board on a daily basis and imagining yourself as an achiever, you will more likely be in the flow.

A reason why you are more likely to achieve your goal via the use of a dream board is because you are conditioning your mind on a settle level to believe that you are capable of achievement. As a result, you will be active in your pursuit of your goal! See the following short YouTube video by My Well -Being below for a way to create a dream board!
